Sol LeWitt (1928-2007) ha avuto un ruolo centrale nella creazione della… nuova estetica radicale degli anni Sessanta, che si contrapponeva in modo rivoluzionario all'Espressionismo astratto della scuola di New York degli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta.LeWitt, come nessun altro artista della sua generazione, ha sempre sostenuto l'importanza del concetto, dell'idea, che sottostanno al lavoro artistico, relegando in secondo piano l'oggetto d'arte, fino a decretarne la totale insignificanza. A parte le sue prime opere originali su carta, le sue opere successive vengono sempre eseguite da altri in base alla sue istruzioni chiare e rigorose. E' stato uno dei primi sostenitori coerenti dell'arte concettuale, il suo scritto Sentences on Conceptual Art (1969) continua a essere considerato come uno dei testi di riferimento sull'arte concettuale. Nato nel 1928 a Hartford, Connecticut, USA dopo aver conseguito una laurea in Belle Arti presso la Syracuse University, ha iniziato a lavorare come grafico per lo studio di architettura di I.M. Pei a New York. Nel 1960 accetta un lavoro al Museum of Modern Art di New York, al bancone dei libri, dove tra i suoi colleghi figurano Robert Ryman, Dan Flavin e Robert Mangold, con i quali inizia a confrontarsi sulle nuove idee sull'arte.Nel corso della sua carriera artistica LeWitt partecipa a mostre collettive fondamentali, tra cui nel 1966 ?Primary Structures? allo Jewish Museum, New York, NY, USA e 10, alla Dwan Gallery, New York, unitamente ai principali artisti minimalisti (Carl Andre, Jo Baer, Dan Flavin, Don Judd, Agnes Martin, Robert Morris, Ad Reinhardt, Robert Smithson, and Michael Steiner); DOCUMENTA IV, Kassel, 1968 e alla fondamentale mostra di Harald Szeeman When Attitude Becomes For, Kunsthalle, Bern, Svizzera, 1969, alla quale partecipavano, fra gli altri, Eva Hesse , Gary Kuehn , Robert Smithson , Alighiero Boetti , Joseph Beuys , Bruce Naumann , Hanne Darboven , Mario Merz , Hans Haacke.Una grande retrospettiva dell'opera di Lewitt è stata organizzata dal San Francisco Museum of Art nel 2000, poi trasferita al Museum of Contemporary Art di Chicago, IL, USA e al Whitney Museum of American Art di New York. Le sue opere sono presenti nelle più importanti collezioni museali, tra cui: Tate Collection, Londra, Regno Unito; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, Paesi Bassi; Musee National d'Art Moderne, Parigi, Francia; Centre Georges Pompidou, Parigi, Francia; Australian National Gallery, Canberra, Australia; Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY, USA; MoMA, New York, NY, USA.
