Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Octavo, brown boards and green cloth lettered in gilt; unclipped pictorial dust jacket. First edition of Lampell's acclaimed play, which was based on the novel by John Hersey. A presentation copy, inscribed by Lampell to William and Margaret Gibson, "For Margaret and Bill - Because he tries to pin down in words what love is, and she tries to make people unafraid of it - And since this is a play about love. Fondly, Millard, October 1961," on the front endpaper. The recipients, the playwright William Gibson, authored endearing works like "The Miracle Worker" (1959) and his wife Margaret Brenman Gibson, the noted psychoanalyst, directed a psychiatric institution in western Massachusetts. In his introduction to the play, Lampell remembered Gibson's "warning to me: `A novel is like taking a walk. You can explore side alleys, stop to think, double back. But a play is like a plane ride. If you stop before your destination, you're dead.'" A significant work with a distinguished provenance. Inscribed by Author(s).
