LOT DESCRIPTION, PLEASE READ This LOT comprises TWO ITEMS: ITEM #1) Original Andy Warhol exhibition poster signed by Warhol in graphite, used to promote his '13 Most Wanted Men' exhibition at the Galerie Rudolf Zwirmer, Cologne, between September 12th and October 30th 1967. Thomas Francis (Duke) Connelly was wanted for robbing $300,000 from a Chase Manhattan bank in Woodside, Queens, New York in 1955. ITEM #2) Original NYPD flyer "Spring 3100" featuring gangland figures Jack Bernstein (Burglary and Grand Larceny) Andrew Ferraiola (Murder) and James Surdo (Murder) which inspired Andy Warhol to go on and create his collection "13 Most Wanted Men". BIOGRAPHY Andy Warhol's '13 Most Wanted Men' series began life as a single composite mural for the 1964 New York World's Fair. Featuring mugshots taken from the 3100 New York Police Department booklet of most wanted men, the mural depicted 22 distinct mugshots, but the title '13 Most Wanted Men' refers to the actual number of individuals whose portraits Warhol used. With the original World's Fair mural painted over prior to the event after accusations of bad taste by the Mayor of New York, Warhol was inspired to create a series of halftone silk screened 'Wanted Men' portraits which were exhibited in 1967 at the Leo Castelli gallery in New York then at Galerie Ileana Sonnabend in Paris and later that year at Cologne's Galerie Rudolf Zwirner. In an interview with Warhol's British born assistant Mark Lancaster, the Yorkshireman recounts Warhol producing the series of prints some time between late April and the end of June, in the aftermath of the mural. In late September 1964, when Warhol joined the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York, eight canvases were recorded in the gallery registry. According to the Castelli registry, Warhol's canvases were consigned to Ileana Sonnabend in May 1966, a year before they were exhibited at her Paris gallery. The catalogue of the Sonnabend exhibition in Paris is not dated, but contemporary reviews place it between February 26 and May 7, 1967. The Sonnabend exhibition traveled to Galerie Rudolf Zwirner, Cologne, where it was on view in September and October of 1967 before traveling to the Rowan Gallery, London, in March 1968. The official "SPRING 3100" flyer in this LOT is a New York Police Department publication. The title comes from the six-digit telephone number for NYPD Headquarters at the time the magazine was founded: SPring 3100. At the time, Police Headquarters was located at 240 Centre Street between Grand and Broome, which was in the geographical area covered by the "Spring" telephone exchange. When telephone numbers in New York changed to seven digits, in the late 1930s, the telephone number of Police Headquarters became SPring 7-3100, but the magazine retained the old number as its name. The magazine's original format size was 11.5" x 9" changing to 9.5" x 7" in 1955. CONDITION & PROVENANCE This signed poster promotes the 1967 Cologne show and remains in near fine condition, with no creasing or toning. Previously documented purchased by a private British collector at auction in the US from the signed collection sale '13 Most Wanted Men'. Warhol's pencil signature above the title is approximately 8cm long.
