The first edition of Artemus Ward (His Travels) Among the Mormons, including both Part I: On the Rampage, and Part II: Perlite Litteratoor, a comical and fictional travel biography, written by Charles Farrar Brown. In the publisher's original cloth, with an ink illustrated frontispiece. Contains publisher's original advertisements to the front and rear of the work. Considered to be America's first stand-up comedian, Charles Farrar Brown's creation Artemus Ward, a barely literatre circus manage loosely based off P.T. Barnum, was hugely popular in both America and England, considered to the favourite author of Abraham Lincoln. In this particular work, Ward takes us to California, Salt Lake City, and Richmond. In the publisher's original brown cloth. Externally, the odd handling mark, and slight fading to the spine. Minor rubbing to joints, and bumping to the head and tail of the spine, and to the extremities, with a small lift to cloth to top extremity. Brown end papers are clean. Tipped in publisher's advertisement to front pastedown. Internally firmly bound, with slight wear between front free end paper and first advertisement leaf, to last advertisement leaf and rear free end paper, and minor between pp.80-81. Previous owner's ink inscription to title leaf. Pages are bright and generally clean with a couple of small marks. Remnants of small sticker to bottom left corner of leaf p.97. Good. book.
