Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 2 volumes. AMAZING ASSOCIATION COPY INSCRIBED BY THE COUNTESS TO WHITELAW REID, US AMBASSADOR TO THE UK, AND LEATHER BOUND BY HENRY STIKEMAN OF THE FAMOUS FINE BINDING COMPANY STIKEMAN & CO. Included at the end of each volume is the original green cloth binding with the Warwick gold seal in FINE condition. Safe to assume the Whitelaw Reid commissioned Stikeman & Co. to rebind these beautiful volumes with red three-quarter leather in buckram (a waxed or impregnated linen) for no other reason than to increase their beauty and value since the included original bindings are in such great shape. Expertly bound into Vol. 1, on gold embossed Warwick Castle stationary and outlined in gold, is an inscription from The Countess of Warwick to Whitelaw Reid. A beautiful association copy of this stunning work. A later owners beautiful bookplate on the title page, Ernest A. Kehr. Kehr was a prominent philatelist whose father lived in Egypt, travelled within the country and, presumably, arose his interest in stamp collecting. The two volume set contains two photogravure plates and 172 illustrations on high quality paper which makes the set solid and heavy. Bindings are tight with some use on the edges and hinges but otherwise near fine in gorgeous condition. Please see photos and request more if you wish. Signed by Author(s).
