Perkins (Author) (illustrator). "Watermarks", by Ruth Perkins, was issued in the 1920s by the Industrial Arts Cooperative Service, in New York City. This Cooperative was set up to provide materials , both instructional and educational, for teachers and children of school age. The book here offered , "Watermarks" is a brief introduction to watermarks as they appear on paper and within books; it is historical in its presentation, and is illustrated with hand-drawn pictures. The booklet, held together by two staples, and measuring 8 3/4" x 11 1/2", is mimeographed (so the text is given on one side only of each leaf), and consists of 6 pages (12 leaves). The text ends with a brief Bibliography (Sources). The front cover has printed on it what was a design generically used for every book issued by the Cooperative. On the right, at the top, is given the name of the Cooperative and its address and telephone number: INDUSTRIAL ARTS COOPERATIVE SERVICE, 519 West 121st Street, New York City - (Monument 2-2644 . obviously a number for a long disused phone system). Under the address is a blank oblong rectangle, into which has been hand-stamped the individual title of the book (This book is, simply : WATERMARKS). To the left of this is a printed square measuring 2 1/2" on each side. It has 12 small pictures , running along the top and bottom edges, depicting various creative activities (some of them artistic, and some mundane), Printed under the top tier of pictures, and above the lower tier, is printed Industrial Arts Cooperative Service. All of this surrounds what seems to have been the guiding philosophy of the Cooperative : For Teachers More Ideas - For Children More Opportunities. TITLE : Watermarks AUTHOR : Ruth Perkins IMPRINT : Industrial Arts Cooperative Service PLACE : New York City DATE : No Date [ but circa 1920s] EDITION : First Edition STATUS : Out of Print - OP - RARE. DETAILS : Mimeographed production; 6 pages (12 leaves); printed card-stock cover, folded once and with 2 staples; cover has a hand-stamped title, and the printed, pictorial logo of the publisher alongside the publisher's name, etc. CONDITION . This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR - There are a few small smudges and spots, as well as softly bumped corner tips with attendant shallow creasing; the staples are rusted, but holding . they have imparted a bit of discoloration - this mostly on the rear cover; else the cover is clean BINDING - Solid as can be expected . no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR - Clean and presentable. No writing, no underlining, no marginalia, no signatures.

From the blurb - "The essays collected in Puzzles in Paper examine the past, present, and future of watermark study, ranging through the disciplines of art history and conservation, bibliography, musicology, and philately. The evidence provided by watermarks and paper stocks is used for a rich variety of purposes: to determine the dating, chronology, and authenticity of musical and literary composition and artistic production; to conceptualize the printing process of a series of incunabula; and to examine the effects of European politics on the paper supply for early printing in the New World. Other essays focus on the development and application of new technologies for the reproduction of watermarks, such as phosphorescence imaging, DYLUX, and digital imaging. Finally, another set of essays describe the use of the World Wide Web as a medium for the construction and dissemination of searchable and robust electronic databases of watermarks. The International Conference on Watermarks, held in Roanoke, Virginia in 1996, attracted scholars and other professionals from seven countries, generating an interest and enthusiasm that carries over into the present volume. The authors and attendees represent a remarkable assemblage of scientific and humanistic expertise: chemists, engineers, experts in digital photography, book dealers and collectors, librarians, archivists, art historians, musicologists, stamp collectors, bibliographers, literary scholars, cartographers, and historians." The contents include: Preface, by Daniel W. Mosier; Concepts of Paper Study, by Paul Needham; Spanish and Italian Watermarks in Colonial Guatemalan Books, by Celia A. Fryer; Watermarks in Rembrandt's Prints: The Use of Watermarks to Study the Prints of an Artist, by Nancy Ash & Shelley Fletcher; Watermark Evidence and the Hidden Editions of Thomas East, by Jeremy L. Smith; Watermarks as Evidence for Dating and Authenticity in John Donne and Ben Franklin, by Laetitia Yeandle; Use of Watermarks in Musicology, by Ulrich Konrad; Watermarks and Rostra in Neapolitan Music Manuscripts, 1700-1815, by Stephen Shearen; Music Paper at the Dresden Court and the Chronology of Telemann's Instrumental Music, by Steven Zolin; Phosphorescence Watermark Imaging, by Carol Ann Small; DYLUX , Thomas L. Gravell, and Watermarks of Stamps and Papers, by Rolf Dessauer; La Marca d'Acqua: A System for the Digital Recording of Watermarks, by Daniela Moschini (Translated by Conor Fahy); Watermarks and Other Physical Evidence from the Portland Literary Manuscripts, by Ruby Reid Thompson; An .Automated World Wide Web Search Tool for Papers and Watermarks: The Archive of Papers and Watermarks in Greek Manuscripts, by Robert W. Allison; The Thomas L. Gravell Watermark Archive on the Internet, by Daniel W. Mosser & Ernest W. Sullivan, II; Towards a Taxonomy of Watermarks, by Ted-Larry Pebworth; Works Cited; Notes on Contributors; Index. Very Good in a dustwrapper with a short tear to the foot of the front hinge.
