This striking manuscript is a late 19th-century German textile student workbook containing handwritte…n notes analyzing weaving patterns of various fabrics, yard runs, roping runs, mill arithmetic, etc. Includes drafts, hand-drawn diagrams, hand-colored patterns and mounted fabric samples (swatches). The mounted diagrams of weaving pattern designs, at their simplest, have the quality of fine folk art, and the 7 full-page drawings of looms in the 'Jacquard' section are simply stunning. The work is presented in five sections covering various aspects of textiles and manufacturing process. Each of the five sections is preceded by an attractive handwritten title: Bindungslehre; Jacquard und Jacquard - Zeichnen; Muster - Ausnehmen / Muster - Berechnung; Musterberechnen; and Componieren. One mounted textile sample, and two original mounted colored diagrammatic designs for weaving patterns are dated '1885'. This workbook belonged to a student who attended the Higher School for Weaving at Werdau, a town located in Saxony (Germany), whose chief industries in the late 19th century were cotton, wool-spinning and the weaving of cloth. In all, this impressive manuscript contains 356 mounted and 19 loose diagrammatic weaving pattern designs, and 75 mounted and 6 loose textile samples. Text within printed red decorative borders. Text in German. Binding rubbed along edges, and closed tears along front joint. Sporadic darkening along outer margin of leaves, not affecting text or samples. Binding in overallgood, interior in good+, samples and waving patterns in very good condition. Binding protected by modern mylar.
