Pattison. From the library of Lincoln MacVeagh and his wife Margaret with their "Arcades ambo" bookplate. Lincoln MacVeagh (1890-1972), a Renaissance man, graduated from Harvard magna cum laude in 1913. He went on to study languages at the Sorbonne and became fluent in German, French, Spanish, Latin, Greek and Classical Greek. He served in the Atois, St. Mihiel and Meuse Argonne campaigns of World War I as an aide to the commanding general of the 80th Division and of the Ninth and Sixth Army Corps. He rose to the rank of Major. After the war he became a director of the Henry Holt and Company publishing firm where he became friendly with the poet Robert Frost. In 1923 he left the firm and founded the Dial Press. His name appears on the imprint of many of their publications. In 1933 President Roosevelt appointed him Minister to Greece. He followed presentation of his credentials with a speech in Classical Greek. While in Greece he conducted excavations beneath the Acropolis and made archeological contributions to the National Museum in Athens. He left Greece in 1941 when the German army over ran the country. From there he was appointed the first US Minister to Iceland where he negotiated agreements for the construction of the Keflavik airfield. In late 1942 he became Minister to the Union of South Africa and coordinated American wartime agencies there. In 1943 he was sent to Cairo as Ambassador so that he could assist the governments in exile of Greece and Yugoslavia. He returned to Athens as Ambassador in 1944. MacVeagh gave secret testimony before Congress concerning the Balkans in 1947, testimony that was an important factor in the formation of the Truman Doctrine. In 1948 as Ambassador to Portugal MacVeagh was influential in admitting her into NATO. In 1952 President Truman named him Ambassador to Spain. President Truman wrote to him on March 9, 1948: "On the occasion of your appointment as Ambassador to Portugal, I would like to make some personal expression of appreciation for the high services you have already rendered your country. During the past fifteen critical years you have served with distinction as Chief of the United states Missions to Iceland, the Union of South Africa, Yugoslavia and Greece. In this last post especially - as Minister from 1933 to 1941 and as Ambassador since 1943 - your scholarly statesmanship and diplomatic judgment have been of the utmost value.".

Additional signature by his wife (Elizabeth Champlin Mason Perry) below the signature: "Mrs. E.C. Perry / Feb'y 1845 / Brooklyn." Provenance: Book was passed down through the Perry family. Sold at Sotheby's, 2018. In 1818, the Perry-Elliott affair came to a head when Perry wrote to Navy Secretary Benjamin Crowninshield preferring court-martial charges against his former subordinate. Not wishing to expose the nation to the controversial aspect of Perry's splendid victory on Lake Erie, President James Monroe offered the prestigious title of "Commodore" to Oliver if he'd drop the charges against Elliott. Upon accepting that offer in early 1819 Perry set sail for the Orinoco River, Venezuela, aboard the frigate John Adams (carrying this very book with him) accompanied by the schooner Nonsuch, there to discourage piracy, while maintaining friendly diplomatic relations with the Republic of Venezuela and the Republic of Buenos Aires. Shifting his flag to the shallow-draft Nonsuch Perry sailed upriver to Angostura to negotiate an anti-piracy agreement with President Simon Bolivar. A favorable treaty was signed on August 11 with Vice-President Francisco Antonio Zea in the absence of Bolivar (who was engaged in the liberation of New Granada), but when the schooner started downriver, many of her crew, including Perry, had been stricken with yellow fever. Despite the crew's efforts to reach Trinidad for medical assistance, the commodore died on board Nonsuch on August 23, 1819, his 34th birthday, as the ship was nearing Port of Spain, his flagship John Adams in sight. He was buried in Port of Spain with great honors while the Nonsuch's crew acted as honor guard. Perry's remains were taken back to the United States in 1826 and interred in Newport, Rhode Island. Originally interred in the Old Common Burial Ground, his body was eventually moved to Newport's Island Cemetery. Signed.

Map titled "Westliche Halbkugel" (Western Hemisphere), is a copperplate engraving from 1876 by Adolf Stieler, a renowned German cartographer. Here's an expanded analysis based on the image and its description: 1. Cartographic Detail: - The map is extremely detailed, depicting the Western Hemisphere with precision. The boundaries between nations and political entities are delineated using vibrant hand-applied color washes, which was common for high-quality maps of the time. - Geographical features such as mountains, swamps, passes, islands, and bodies of water are carefully labeled. This level of detail is characteristic of Stieler's work, particularly in the 1870s when his *Hand Atlas* became one of the most detailed and accurate atlases available. 2. Mapmaker's Signature: - The map is signed by *Gotha Justus Perthes*, one of the most prestigious German cartographic publishing firms. Established by Johan Georg Justus Perthes, the firm became a leader in European cartography. The Perthes family business was responsible for producing some of the finest maps and atlases of the 19th century. - Adolf Stieler was one of the key figures in this firm, known for his precise and detailed work. 3. Map Features: - The map focuses on the Western Hemisphere, showcasing the Americas, as well as parts of the Pacific Ocean and nearby islands (Polynesia is labeled, for example). - The labels are in German, reflecting the map's origin. - The map likely includes geographical information like relative ocean depths and underwater features, which were an innovative inclusion in Stieler's works. 4. Condition and Quality: - The description notes that the map is in very good condition. - Stieler's maps were known for being printed on high-quality paper with deep platemarks, indicating the care taken in their production. 5. Historical Context: - This map reflects a period of intense interest in geography and exploration in Europe. By the 1870s, much of the Americas had been mapped in detail, and maps like this would have been used for educational and reference purposes by scholars, explorers, and possibly governments. - The map is a snapshot of geopolitical boundaries as they were understood at the time, with the clear delineation of national borders. This map, part of the legacy of one of the greatest cartographic publishing firms of the 19th century, is an excellent example of the craftsmanship and scientific rigor of its time. It would be highly valued by collectors of antique maps, especially those with an interest in the detailed and historically significant works of the Justus Perthes firm.
