(frontispiece); Town of Yale B.C. Fraser River; Nanaimo; Esquimalt Harbour. Climate Chart to Illustrate the Prevailing Winds of Vancouver Island (folding). Meteorological Abstract of Esquimalt, Vancouver Island, for the Year 1860-61 (folding table). From: Layland, Michael. The Land of Heart's Delight: Early Maps and Charts of Vancouver Island (page 143): "Also in 1862, another naval surgeon based in Esquimalt, Alexander Rattray, published Vancouver Island and British Columbia, Where they are, what they are, and what they may become. His book included a small outline sketch map, three scenic engravings, and two meteorological diagrams. The author addressed what was then becoming an issue: "Our unhappily imperfect knowledge of the greater part of Vancouver Island necessarily renders any inquiry respecting it both incomplete and unsatisfactory. A large part of it remains to be explored. An urgent necessity exists for a complete survey of the interior of the island." Alexander Rattray (1830, Dundee, Scotland 1906, Hull, Yorkshire). Rattray was a naval surgeon for the Royal Navy. He was stationed in Esquimalt Harbour in 1861, according to the census of that year. On December 19, 1865, he married Eliza A. Harwood, in Sydney, Australia. In 1872, he wrote a description of the Brazilian archipelago Fernando de Noronha for the Royal Geographic Society. Besides being an author, he was also an artist. He created artworks, mostly watercolours, of Vancouver Island, the Straits of Magellan, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Australian coast, and Japan. In later years he wrote two books on hygiene. Condition: Faded blue cloth, worn along corners, edges, and joints. Faded gilt. Top right corner of front cover eroded. Corners of covers bent inwards. Spine ends frayed with some loss. Front hinge starting. Some browning of pages along page margins. Tissue guards heavily browned. Sketch map with many creases, also browning and some erosion along bottom left margin. Some dampstaining to engravings of Yale and Esquimalt. Good. Signed by author.
