Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition. Edges faintly foxed, otherwise an excellent copy. Binding tight and square, text clean and unmarked. 1993 Hard Cover. 320 pp. Includes two sections of black-and-white photographs. The drummer and lead singer for The Band chronicles his career, which has paralleled the evolution of modern rock music. The group first gained prominence as the backing band for Bob Dylan when he went electric in 1965 (a controversial but ultimately successful choice), and later released their own albums. Now regarded as one of the most important groups of the sixties, their influence is difficult to overestimate. The Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. And if his success as a musician weren't enough, Helm also starred in a number of important films, including: The Coal Miner's Daughter; The Right Stuff; Smooth Talk, Shooter; and In the Electric Mist. First edition of this memoir and cultural history by the legendary Levon Helm. Octavo, original publisher's half-cloth, illustrated with black and white photographs. Association copy, inscribed by Levon Helm on the front free endpaper, "A.P. What a ball. We know how. Always a pleasure buddy. Come see me Levon Helm." The recipient, Alan Pariser, was Helm's friend and the organizer of the Monterey Pop Festival. He went on to manage Delaney & Bonnie and Dave Mason, which led to collaborations with many of the eraās biggest rock stars including George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and Ringo Starr. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Levon Helm (1940ā"2012) was an American drummer, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist best known as a founding member of The Band, whose fusion of rock, folk, blues, and country helped define the roots-rock idiom of the late twentieth century. Distinguished by his earthy, soulful voice and his mastery of Southern musical traditions, Helm brought a distinctive regional authenticity to The Bandās sound, most memorably in songs such as The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down. This Wheelās on Fire: Levon Helm and the Story of the Band (1993) offers Helm's first-hand account of the rise, triumphs, and tensions of The Band. Co-written with Stephen Davis, the book provides an insider perspective on the groupās evolution from backing Ronnie Hawkins and Bob Dylan to achieving independent success with their seminal albums Music from Big Pink (1968) and The Band (1969). Helmās narrative, marked by candor and at times bitterness, especially toward Robbie Robertson, situates the group within the shifting landscape of 1960s and 1970s rock while foregrounding themes of collaboration, authorship, and artistic integrity.

Dust Jacket Condition: dj. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper: "Kevin / Many thanks / Levon Helm." From Helm's humble origins in Chicken Scratch, AR, where tornadoes took away his home not once but twice, to playing with Ronnie Hawkins, to meeting the legendary musicians who along with him would form The Band. The Band would become Bob Dylan's most beloved backing musicians, and would go on to record masterpieces of their own, ending with Martin Scorsese's extraordinary documentary "The Last Waltz" in 1975. Faithfully transcribed throughout in Helm's distinctive southern rhythm, and with a decidedly southern perspective. Near Fine and unread in a Near Fine dust jacket. Hint of foxing to the top page edges. Signed.
