First Puffin Books edition (No. PS 152). 204pp., many black and white in-text illustrations by Maurice Sendak and 2 pages advertising 2 other Puffin stories. Meindert DeJong (1906-1991) was a Dutch-born American writer of children's books, and won the international Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1962 for his contributions as a children's writer. The Wheel on the School was first published in 1954, and tells the story of Lina, one of six school children in the small fishing village of Shora in Friesland. When she writes an essay for school that asks why there are no storks in their village, she sets all the others to wondering. Their teacher encourages the class to find out for themselves. The children set out to bring the storks back, but they have to overcome many obstacles. The book is bound in paperback form in the original card covers and showing a publisher's printed price of 3/-. The book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling to the covers. The spine ends and edges are rubbed and the corners of the covers are slightly curled with some light creasing. The contents are secure and clean with slight age-browning to the pages. A name has been written on the top corner of the inside of the front cover.
