Upon Farrell's death, McCarthy wrote a tribute, "For Jim Farrell's Funeral," for the November 8, 1979 issue of *The New York Review of Books*. Additionally, this copy is Inscribed by the author to Malcolm Cowley and his wife: "To Malcolm and Muriel, Jim Farrell." Cowley and Farrell were both residents of Greenwich Village during the 1930s, and both were active participants in various left wing activities including several American Writer's Congresses. This is Farrell's retelling of the story of Adam and Eve.
