First edition. 256pp., a black and white frontispiece and other black and white illustrations within the text by Thomas Henry. Richmal Crompton Lamburn (1890-1969) was a famous English writer, best known for his popular 'William' books, with the first book in the series appearing in 1922. This 'William' book is number 32 in the series and William is playing on the edge of the space age, conscious of Hillary in search of the yeti and the perennial fact that the bottom of the garden is unexplored territory. The book is bound in the original green boards with gold titling and a gold illustration of William on the spine and gold titling on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with a small dent to the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with light soiling and the spine is faded. The spine ends are bumped and nicked with a few small pieces missing. The top front edge is rubbed with tears of about 1/2" near each corner and creasing between the tears. The tears have been repaired on the front and back of the wrapper with tape.
