Bernard Jaffe (1896 -1986) Was An American Educator, Chemist And Historian Of Science. William Draper Harkins (1873 - 1951) Was A U.S. Chemist, Notably For His Contributions To Nuclear Chemistry. Harkins Researched The Structure Of The Atomic Nucleus And Was The First To Propose The Principle Of Nuclear Fusion,Four Years Before Jean Baptiste Perrin Published His Theory In 1919-20. Harkins Graduated With A Phd From Stanford University In 1907, And Spent His Career At The University Of Chicago From 1912. Harkins Correctly Predicted The Existence Of The Neutron In 1920 (As A Proton-Electron Complex) And Was The First To Use The Word "Neutron" In Connection With The Atomic Nucleus. The Neutron Was Detected Experimentally By James Chadwick In 1932. In The Beginning Of The 1930S, Harkins Built A Cyclotron. From Experiments With This, He Concluded That The Sun Might Be Powered By Nuclear Fusion. Among Other University Of Chicago Scientists Who Made Use Of This Cyclotron Was Enrico Fermi, Who Performed Neutron Diffusion Experiments. Harkins Is Discussed On Four Pages Of The Book. Book Fine. The letter about arranging a visit from "my reader" with a little humour adding that he cannot promise to stay in "if he finds me just going to visit the Archbishop of Canterbury I shall have to go - but otherwise he can take me for a walk in Battersea Park" signed in a hurry Wm De M. William Frend De Morgan 1839 - 1917 was an English potter, tile designer and novelist. A lifelong friend of William Morris, he designed tiles, stained glass and furniture for Morris & Co. from 1863 to 1872. His tiles often recall medieval or Islamic design patterns. He applied innovative glazes and firing techniques. Galleons and fish were common motifs, as were "fantastical" birds and animals. Many of De Morgan's tiles were designed to create intricate patterns when several were laid together. Friends with William Morris His designs were used by Morris & co. There are collections of his work in the V&A, Birmingham Museum, National Gallery of Canada etc. Size is 180mm x 115mm. Ref18886. Signed by Author(s).

Edwin Denison Morgan (1811-1883), former Governor of New York (1859-1862) and U.S. Senator (1863-1869), wrote and signed this brief letter to William King Rogers, President Rutherford B. Hayes' private secretary. He writes: "Will you do me the favor to hand the enclosed to the President as soon as received". Morgan also served as the first chairman of the Republican National Committee (1872-1876) and as a Union Army general during the Civil War. Written on one side of a folded piece of 7 ¼" x 8 ¾" stationery. Condition: Fold lines, light overall soil, mounting remnants on verso, otherwise good condition with a bold signature.
