Paperback. Small 8vo. Stiff glazed pictorial wrappers. xi, 297pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Near fine. First paperback edition (slightly enlarged) of this literary history. On the front flyleaf, Dardis boldly signs and inscribes in blue fineline: "11/19/91 / For Ralph Gardner / Thanks! / Tom Dardis." Dardis (1926-2001) was a noted American editor at Avon Books and Berkely Publishing (editor-in-chief 1960-72), later an English professor who authored, among other things, biographies of Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd. Ralph Gardner (1924-2005 ) was a noted New York City ad man and even more noted Horatio Alger scholar who had a New York City radio talk show for years -- where he must have interviewed Dardis. Signed copies of this title are seldom seen.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp, 12mo. Bifolium. Twenty-two lines of text. In good condition, lightly discoloured and worn. Folded for postatge. The addressee's name is unclear. Signed 'Clement Scott'. Begins 'If the article on the Gaiety has to be cut - they are [?] cut sometimes on Sundays - please ask them as a special favour not to cut the remarks about the wonderful song "The Bogie man." I know it is wrong to prophesy but this song will bring [fortune?] to the Burlesque and no one has touched on it as yet.' He could 'do "La Cycle"', but does not want 'to interfere with these comic operas unless B[?] permits it'. He continues: 'You will see from my Gaiety article that I am not ignorant of the effect of music on the profanum vulgus but of course I have no executive power'. He can 'describe music', but cannot talk about 'contrapuntal passages', and doesn't think it is wanted 'on the comic stage'.

Governor of New Zealand (1853-1911). Two pages, 4to. Grubby, foxed and discoloured, and with traces of archival tape adhering to second leaf. 'I am entirely at one with you in thinking that there is no reason in cottage building why one should sacrifice appearance and picturesqueness to mere cheapness. I went very carefully over your cottage, and [.] I thought it the most practical of all those that were exhibited, and it was for that reason that I wrote for what I thought was a treatise upon the subject. | The elevation is very much that of many of the cottages in that part of Essex where I own some property.' Discusses the use of elm, and asks if any contractor would be willing to erect 'such cottages at £420 a pair?' Signed 'Onslow'.

Two actually congruent sections clipped from secretarial Letter Signed "J. Scott Russell", 11 x 5cm (Address as above), and 11 x 6cm (sentiment with signature), considerable loss of text which appears to have been a recommendation of another engineer perhaps for employment. Surviving text (on reverse of the two portions and as it turns out congruent ) as follows: "Presidency in India, who has brought me introductions from old friends on whom I can thoroughly rely. | He has been in charge (second fragment follows on) important Engineering Works there, which have been thoroughly successful". Address section has a discreet reference to Scott-Russell's Modern System of Naval Architecture clipped from a periodical.
