This is one of The Gettysburg Civil War Institute series of books. Gabor S. Boritt (born 1940 in Budapest, Hungary) is an American historian. He was the Robert Fluhrer Professor of Civil War Studies and Director of the Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College. Born and raised in Hungary, he participated as a teenager in the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 against the Soviet Union before escaping to America, where he received his higher education and became a scholar of Abraham Lincoln and the American Civil War. He is the author, co-author, or editor of 16 books about Lincoln or the War. Boritt received the National Humanities Medal in 2008 from President George W. Bush. Nearly a century and a half after his death, Abraham Lincoln remains an intrinsic part of the American consciousness, yet his intentions as president and his personal character continue to stir debate. Now, in The Lincoln Enigma, Gabor Boritt invites renowned Lincoln scholars, and rising new voices, to take a look at much-debated aspects of Lincoln's life, including his relationships, his plan to send blacks back to Africa, and his high-handed treatment of the Constitution. Boritt explores Lincoln's proposals that looked to a lily-white America. Jean Baker marvels at Lincoln's loves and marriage. David Herbert Donald highlights the similarities and differences of the Union and Confederate presidents' roles as commanders-in-chief. Douglas Wilson shows us the young Lincoln--not the strong leader of popular history, but a young man who questions his own identity and struggles to find his purpose. Gerald Prokopowicz searches for the military leader, William C. Harris for the peacemaker, and Robert Bruce meditates on Lincoln and death. In a final chapter Boritt and Harold Holzer offer a fascinating portfolio of Lincoln images in modern art. Acute and thought-provoking in their observations, this all-star cast of historians--including two Pulitzer and three Lincoln Prize winners--questions our assumptions of Lincoln, and provides a new vitality to our ongoing reflections on his life and legacy.

Add to basketIn good condition, lightly aged and worn. Christmas card with unusual image of the three wise men (in Roman helmets) seen from behind, following the guiding star as it leads them across a Hawaian beach to the hut in which the birth of the messiah is occurring. Printed message in card in Hawaian and English. The reverse of the second leaf has nothing printed on it other than the publisher's slug, and at the head the prime minister has written 'Happy Christmas'. Beneath this, one above the other, are the five signatures: 'Harold Wilson | Mary Wilson. | Giles Wilson. | George Brown | Sophie Brown'. At bottom right is written the date '1966'. Written in German, inside the card, presumably by Sophie Brown, is a message in German, dated 'Honolulu 10.12.1966.' It is signed 'Ihre [Polali?]'. The visit to Hawaii does not appear to have been an official one. It would certainly have made for a lively holiday: while Brown is remembered as a hopeless drunkard, Wilson's consumption of alcohol was apparently even greater.

Add to basketThe album is bound in the distinctive green and white stripes of the Nigerian flag, with the Nigerian coat of arms bearing the motto "Unity and Faith" in gilt to the upper board. Opening the album both pastedowns have been decorated with marbled paper, a programme of events, inscribed by Yakubu Gowon and dated 31.03.69, has been attached to the first page and there follows 39 photographs mounted on black paper with spiders web embossed protective tissue guards. The photographs measure either 21cm by 19cm or 24cm by 19cm and document the visit chronologically, beginning with Wilson's arrival at Ikeja Airport. Several photographs feature people protesting against the Nigerian civil war and the messages on their banners are as good a reminder of the background to the visit as any, they read: "No stalemate in Nigeria War", "No genocide against Ibos" and, most pertinently, "Wilson's Britain Blessing or Bane?". Britain had ostensibly been advocating a peaceful settlement to the conflict between Nigeria's Federal Military Government(headed by Yakubu Gowon) and the would be independent state of Biafra, whilst supplying a prodigious quantity of arms and assistance, covert or otherwise, to the FMG. Papers released years later reveal that Britain's actions were dictated by financial rather than moral obligations, the decision having been made that Britain's interests were best served by Nigeria remaining a single united state, as there was no guarantee that a future Biafran state would grant such favourable terms to Shell/BP in accessing oil in the Eastern region, and that even should they do this there was no guarantee that trade would continue smoothly between east and west. Britain also had geopolitical concerns, holding the view that a strong united Nigera as a major African power was desirable, as a break up of the Federation would allow France and its allies to exercise greater influence in the region. Similarly to recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan Wilson was challenged frequently in the House of Commons on the legitimacy and extent of Britain's involvement in the conflict, his responses are impressively adroit in their prevarication, occasionally veering across the fine line of truth. A fascinating emblem of the difficult decisions faced by a succession of financially crippled British Governments during the immediate post-war/post-colonial period, as well as a reminder of how adept, persuasive and intelligent Harold Wilson was as a statesman. Although Wilson would later write of the toll that this statecraft took on him, revealing that Nigeria: "took up far more of my time, and that of ministerial colleagues, and far more moral wear and tear than any other issue.". The album was kept by Harold Wilson throughout the remainder of his life and subsequently by his wife, Lady Mary Wilson and comes from the collection of Harold and Mary Wilson.
