Add to basketHardcover. Condition: vg-. First edition. 1/50. Quarto. viii, 118, [2]pp. Period red pebbled leather with gilt ruling on the covers. Spine with gilt ruling and lettering, and raised bands. Top edge in gilt.Dentelles. Marbled endpapers. Red ribbon marker. This is one of 50 copies of the work (from a total edition of 150) printed…on velin paper, hand numbered and signed by the author, on the colophon. Curiously this copy has the copy number scribbled out, so it is indecipherable. A French treatise on wolf hunting written by Count Jean-Emmanuel Hector Le Couteulx de Canteleu (1827-1910), the noted French cavalry officer, dog breeder and hunting specialist. Illustrated throughout with a total of 8 original mounted photographs credited to Léon Crémière and Franz Hanfstaengl. The frontispiece image is a photograph after an unidentified original painting of dogs attacking a wolf. All images (including the frontispiece) are tissue guarded. All images except for the frontispiece are captioned underneath. Images here include wolfs, hunting dogs (including bloodhounds), and Pierre Claude (Nennen), the famous wolf scout, with his horse. An additional loose photograph of a dog (likely a Gascon Hound) is laid in at the half-title. The final pages include a glossary of hunting terms, a detailed table of contents and a list of plates. Among the earliest photo-illustrated books on hunting. Text throughout in French. Binding with slight cracking in the hinges of the spine. Light scratches to the covers. Head and tail of the spine lightly bumped. Binding tight overall. Illustrated bookplate from a previous owner pasted on the interior front cover. Interior with minor foxing to pages throughout. Images overall clean and vibrant. Binding and interior in very good- condition overall. Léon Crémière (1831-1913) was a noted French photographer most active in the mid 19th century. He is known for his numerous images of military officers and animals. Franz Seraph Hanfstaengl (March 1804 -1877) was a Bavarian painter, lithographer, and photographer, most noted for his mid-19th century portraits of celebrities, political figures and member of the European monarchy. Bibliographic reference: Thiébaud 572.
