Seller: Jarndyce, The 19th Century Booksellers, London, United Kingdom
Bound 2 vols in one, without half titles. Half brown calf, marbled boards, rubbed, black label. Ownership inscription of 'Mary Cholmondeley, Berne, May 28th 1874'. Todd 525 & 526. First published in book form in 1860, after being published in All the Year Round from 1859-60. One of the earliest English detective novels and a classic sensation mystery. A young art teacher has a strange encounter with a mysterious woman dressed all in white who is lost in London. After giving her directions, he later discovers that she has escaped from an asylum; he becomes further embroiled in the intrigue when he takes a job at a country house and one of the women of the house strongly resembles the woman in white. A tremendous commercial successful when originally published, it failed to gain critical acclaim during Collins's lifetime - though he himself considered it his greatest work, and today it is considered a great English novel. William Wilkie Collins, 1824-1889, was a novelist and playwright, the son of an artist he had grown up between England, Italy, and France. He met Charles Dickens around 1850 and the two became friends, with Collins frequently contributing works to Household Words and All the Year Round. Collins wrote his most enduring and successful works during the 1860s, which granted him financial stability for the rest of his life. He became addicted to opium, used to treat his gout, and both his work and his health declined during the final decades of his life. Mary Cholmondeley, 1859-1925, novelist, whose first published work was The Danvers Jewels, a detective story published in 1887.
