Soft cover. Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. "How I Won the War" by Patrick Ryan. Published in 1967 by Ballantine Books. First Edition, First Printing. Movie Tie-In Edition "Ex-infantryman and reconnaissance officer, author and humorist Patrick Ryan is perhaps best remembered for this acerbically comic novel - first published in 1963 and quickly adapted into a 1967 feature film by Richard Lester, starring Michael Crawford and John Lennon. It is a satirical 'memoir' of the misadventures of the haphazard and notably naive Lieutenant Ernest Goodbody and his fellow fighting men of Twelve Platoon - Sergeant Transom, Corporals Hink, Globe and Dooley, Private Drogue et al - as they stumble ill-preparedly into the theatres of World War Two." Book is in Poor condition, but is still bound & readable. A lot, lot of rubbing/wear/creasing on the covers. Small tears on the edges of the covers. Several spine creases. Staining on the outside page edges. Some of the staining does bleed onto some of the interior pages. Inked name on inside. Your purchase supports a small business. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good dj. Illustrated by (dj) Isadore Seltzer (illustrator). First American Edition. [nice tight clean copy, minor shelfwear only, "The Mirisch Corporation" stamped on front endpaper; the jacket is only lightly edgeworn, but downgraded because of severe fading to spine (title is unreadable)]. "A super-hilarious comedy of military misadventure," a faux-WWII memoir likened in the jacket blurb to a "British 'No Time for Sergeants'," and further declared to be "right on target for readers who like Peter Sellers or Alec Guinness." Alas, when they made a movie out of it, they didn't get either one of those fellows but had to make do with Michael Crawford and John Lennon (the latter in an actual acting role, for the first and last time), and the resulting film proved to be an uncharacteristic low point for the director (Richard Lester) who was then riding high. (The "Mirisch Corporation" stamp inside this book notwithstanding, the Mirisches apparently had nothing to do with the production of the film.).
