When a cyclone whisked Dorothy far from the gray prairies of Kansas to the colorful Land of Oz, it not only set a courageous and determined little girl on a series of unforgettable adventures it blew fresh air into children s literature. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is what the author called "a modern fairy tale, in which the wonderment and joy are retained and the heartache and nightmares left out." It's now more than a hundred years since Dorothy and her endearing companions, her mischievous dog Toto, the brainless but practical-minded Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, and the kindly Tin Woodsman who longs for a heart, first marched along the yellow brick road into storybook history. In this edition, Michael Foreman's bright, whimsical watercolors of Dorothy and her friends capture the enchanting essence of L. Frank Baum's "wondertale." Ref V V V 1. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Add to basketFull-Leather. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: None issued. Greg Manchess (illustrator). 1st Edition. Please contact me re possible discounts. This is one of 26 lettered copies (this being letter K), fully leatherbound and complete with portfolio of signed prints. In super-fine condition. Accompanied by a portfolio of illustrations and a piece of original art. Limited to 26 copies Trimmed page size - 240 x 170mm Signed by Gregory Manchess Printed letterpress on Madrid Litho mould-made paper by Phil Abel and Robert Hetherington of Hand and Eye Letterpress. Printed in black and green throughout on a Heidelberg cylinder press using photopolymer plates. This edition is newly illustrated by award-winning oil painter Gregory Manchess. There are 22 paintings, comprising 21 full-page and one half-page colour images. This includes 4 double page spreads tipped onto tabs. All images are giclee printed by Hurtwood and sewn into the structure of the binding. The lettered edition is bound as a design binding, fully inlaid with leather and consisting of multiple inlaid panels to create a patchwork of greens. The design is inspired by the greens of the Emerald City as well as the journey through the woods along the yellow brick road. The greens on either side of the road suggest the shapes of the trees and the shafts of light shining through the canopy. The leather used includes J. Hewit & Sons straight grain, Harmatan finest, Oasis Fine and Hewit's Pentland goatskins. This variety of very fine grade leathers creates a lovely selection of grains and finishes across the different panels. There is no set pattern for the positioning of the leather so each copy will be slightly different. Endpapers are stiff leaf, made from hand marbled paper by Freya Scott of Paperwilds and backed with foil blocked Napura Khepera paper. Silk ribbon marker. Sculpted leather head-caps. Silver on all three page edges. The book comes in a rounded spine, full leather solander box. Covered in yellow goatskin and foil blocked to the front and back board with a swarm of flying monkeys in black. The text on the front board and spine is foil blocked in green. The trays are covered in yellow Colorado cloth and lined with charcoal Suedel. The solander box contains a green Colorado cloth covered portfolio with a four-tongue enclosure, holding 4 hand numbered giclee prints on 250gsm Somerset paper and an original pencil sketch by Gregory Manchess. Please be aware that there may be minor alterations to the design as we enter the production stage. Notes from the publisher - This edition is freshly illustrated with 22 stunning oil paintings by award-winning artist, Gregory Manchess. All copies are signed by the artist. The books are printed with a combination of letterpress and litho for the Numbered edition and letterpress and giclee for the Lettered edition. The text is printed letterpress by Hand and Eye in two colours throughout, using photopolymer plates. The colour images of both editions are printed by Hurtwood directly to the page and sewn into the structure of the bindings rather than being tipped into or onto the pages. The exception is the four double page spreads which are tipped onto tabs, allowing the pages to fold out without any sewing through the centre. Our edition contains an afterword by the artist. All copies, as always, are hand bound by us using the finest materials available. More photos available upon request - please contact me for any questions, including about tariffs. Other match-lettered editions from Lyra's Press also available at this time. Signed by Illustrator(s).
