Seller: Stanley Louis Remarkable Books, Saint Charles, IL, U.S.A.
Condition: Very Good. James Gillray (1756 - 1815) was a British caricaturist and printmaker famous for his etched political and social satires, mainly published between 1792 and 1810. Many of his works are held at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Gillray has been called "the father of the political cartoon", with his works satirizing George III, Napoleon, prime ministers and generals. Regarded as being one of the two most influential cartoonists, the other being William Hogarth, Gillray's wit and humor, knowledge of life, fertility of resource, keen sense of the ludicrous, and beauty of execution, at once gave him the first place among caricaturists. This is a very good copy of a fascinating summary of both his work and his life, with dozens of full-page plates. Marbled edges all around. Ex-library, with the library's label on the front pastedown and discreet ink stamps on endpapers, title page and most of the plates, to discourage pilferage. Corners, spine ends and boards show minor scuffing. The volume actually appears little used, given its age. Being a very heavy book, the hinges have been tape-reinforced and thus are sound. 1/4 leather on gray cloth. Original spine has been covered with maroon binder's cloth tape for strengthening. There are small chips on the edge of the front endpaper. Text shows scattered light foxing, primarily on the frontis and title page, but is quite clean overall. No other marks or damage. .
