Hardcover. Condition: Good. Would assume a very rare and first edition! Circa 1740-1745 - Undated and without complete title so we are not sure on this one! But on the spine although part damaged and faded STERLING WORKS is visible. The title page is cut of at the top but the following is intact - To the Honourable Colonel Charles Lanoe, And to the worthy Gentlemen, The Field-Officers, The Captains and Subalterns commanded by him in his Majesty's own Royal Regiment of foot, This volume of POEMS Is humbly Inscribed and Dedicated by their faithful Servant and Chaplin James Sterling. 282 pages of clear text that include the following among many other titles: An ODE on the times, To a Gentleman of Cambridge, an epilogue spoken by Mrs. Sterling on her quitting the stage, The Lovers of Hero and Leander. The Rival Generals, as it was acted at the Theatre Royal, Dublin (verse drama in five acts). Leather boards intact but having chips and on spine edges and some corners also spine torn in centre. All pages are intact but have the feeling of dampness, with part pages to binding coming loose on lower end towards the middle/end of book, but is still intact. Opening pages are torn and have endpages missing as in rear with pencil and crayon notes on rear endpages. Very scarce & rare. James Sterling was born in Ireland at Dowrass, King's County, in the year 1701, the son of James Sterling, described in the register of Trinity College, Dublin, as "generosus" or gentleman.* In a letter of his later life, the younger Sterling referred to his father as one who had held a "Post of Dignity in the Army for near fifty Years,"* and in the dedication of his first tragedy. The Rival Generals, published in 1722. James Sterling's Poetical Works, Dublin, 1734, the only recorded copy of which is in the Library of St. Paul's Cathedral. Not sure if the above is a similar copy of this one.
