Small signature and date handwritten on top corner of front end paper. Top, Tail and Fore edge aged discoloured. Internally Good - Quick flick through pages could not see any issues. The odd book from this person's collection did have minor pencil annotation/underlining/reference points - but didn't see any in this book when having a quick check this time but it is still possible to miss as some are very minor. First Edition. Brathwaite [1878-1962] was an African-American writer, poet, literary critic and editor. In 1918, he was awarded the Spingarn Medal by the NAACP. The book is dedicated to his friend and Boston-based bookseller Andrew McCance. Signed presentation from McCance on the dedication page: "To Cassie (again), From Andrew. Christmas, 1930." With another signed presentation below: "And- with sincere regard, P.K.F. (his + mark)." With another very brief presentation on the front endpaper: "Cassie from Jim. Merry Christmas 1920." From the personal collection of fellow Swiss-born artist and designer, Fred Rentschler, who emigrated to America in the early 1920's, and later taught at the Cleveland [Ohio] School of Art. His collection contained examples of proofs & finished pieces of bookplates, new year's greetings, book illustrations, title-page designs, initial letters, etc. mainly produced by Swiss artists & designers, ca. 1917-22, including a few of his Swiss bookplate designs.
