Upper cover quite unevenly faded, as is spine cloth, spine a bit cocked, else Very Good, internally fine. Tipped in 3pp. autograph letter, signed, and dated We…st Point, New York, April 8, 1888, addressed to a Mr. Turner regarding an invitation to visit him Colorado. However, "I have purchased some land adjoining [?] & am very busy & very happy clearing it up ready for grapes. I have not enjoyed myself as much for a long time. I did not sell my place as I was much inclined to do, but have now taken deeper root at West Point. I have got the grape craze & I hope it will last." When given the choice of his table grapes and Colorado, Burroughs leans in favor of the latter. Pencil gift inscription of E.S. Turner dated Washington, D.C, 1896, to the collector Alfred Henry Mulliken, with the latter's armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Presumably Turner included this letter, written eight years previously, as part of his gift to Mulliken. BAL 2217. Signed.
