Good condition with unmarked text, free of stamps, securely bound. Wear to page and cover corners. -- 'I Remember When I Was Young' is a 400 page collection of half a century of personal memories. Beginning in the 1920s and ending with the 1960s, each chapter contains stories and recollections from individuals throughout the UK and abroad. A wide range of personal memories from childhood, early adulthood and later life. Some recall humorous or emotional incidents unconnected with the world around them; others describe episodes that have a direct connection to the major events of the day. Written in a variety of styles, all recall a time very different to the present day and all who lived at that time will feel a sense of belonging and possibly a tinge of regret that this time has now passed. Younger readers may be astonished at some of the day to day activities that were taken for granted by their older relatives. Each chapter covers a decade and begins with an overview of the main historical events of the time. Important discoveries and 'firsts' are highlighted, together with notable anniversaries. The main focus, however, is not on well-documented historical events but on ordinary people's own personal reminiscences. Everyday stories, which will make the reader laugh, cry, ponder and remember. The memories from each decade paint a picture of life as it was lived by the individuals concerned. Some led similar lives. Some had very different experiences. All are real people sharing their memories with the rest of us. Each decade is distinctly different and the memories captured in this book show how values and lifestyles have changed - perhaps not always for the better. 'I Remember When I Was Young' is not a comprehensive view of life in earlier times. It is a series of snapshots of life as it was lived by ordinary (and in some cases, extraordinary) people. People like you and I. Signed by Author(s).

The first edition of actor and orthoepist Thomas Sheridan's (1719?-1788) courtesy book, a didactic manual on the proper moral and intellectual education of young gentlemen in preparation for university. Sheridan, dissatisfied by contemporary modes of teaching, proposes an entire reworking of the school system, presenting a scheme whereby boys are taught according to the needs of the profession which they have been chosen to pursue (law, holy orders, the military etc). The Critical Review (Vol. XXVIII, 1769), unimpressed by the author's notions, believed that 'the arrangements here laid down, must prove inconvenient, if not dangerous, because it supposes the boys to be marked out by their parents to particular walks of life, before their tempers or genius can be known.we should be sorry to see any plan of education established in this free country upon governmental authority; or that learning.should be dictated to British youth by any man, be he whom he may'.
