Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. One of the most beloved songs from Rodgers and Hammerstein's classic Broadway musical The King and I, Hello, Young Lovers premiered in 1951 and was introduced by Gertrude Lawrence in her acclaimed portrayal of Anna Leonowens. Based on Margaret Landon's Anna and the King of Siam, the musical became one of the defining works of the American musical theatre canon. This original Williamson Music edition includes complete piano accompaniment, vocal line, and guitar chord diagrams, making it equally desirable for performers, theatre historians, and collectors of Broadway ephemera. Condition is Very Good. The decorative cover remains attractive with strong red and purple printing and only moderate handling wear. Light edge wear, corner creasing, and several small chips and short closed tears are present along the fore-edge and upper margins. The interior is clean with no writing or ownership markings observed. Music pages remain securely attached and fully legible. Overall an attractive, complete example suitable for both collection and performance. Interior rear, top-right corner shows staining (as pictured.) This is an original 1951 first edition sheet music issue, published by Williamson Music, Inc., bearing the original 1951 copyright by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. The rear advertisement promotes Rodgers and Hammerstein publications including South Pacific, Carousel, Oklahoma!, Allegro, and State Fair, all titles current in Williamson's catalog during the early 1950s and consistent with an early first-issue printing. Unlike many Broadway songs that became popular only after film adaptations, Hello, Young Lovers first gained fame through Gertrude Lawrence's original Broadway performance, making early 1951 sheet music editions especially appealing to theatre collectors. Lawrence died unexpectedly in 1952, only months after originating the role, lending original Broadway material from The King and I an added historical significance connected to one of the twentieth century's greatest stage actresses. Richard Rodgers (1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (1895-1960) transformed American musical theatre through works such as Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Their partnership elevated the integrated musical, in which songs advanced character and plot rather than serving merely as entertainment. Their works remain among the most performed and collected in Broadway history. Gertrude Lawrence (1898-1952) was one of the foremost stars of the Broadway and West End stages. She originated the role of Anna Leonowens in The King and I, a performance written specifically for her by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Although illness forced her death during the musical's original run, her interpretation helped establish the production as one of Broadway's enduring classics.…
