Hardcover. Condition: Like New. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. Inscribed "Thanks for your support of KDNK Henry Kisor Carbondale 30.III.94". KDNK is a community access station in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. It broadcasts a format of music and local news in western Colorado in the United States. The station serves Carbondale, Aspen, Glenwood Springs, and other parts of the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond through its main transmitter and a series of mountain-top translators stretching from the Crystal Valley to Leadville. Kisor was the book editor of the Chicago Daily News from 1973 to 1978, then of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1978 to his retirement in 2006.His reviews and articles have appeared in the New York Times Book Review, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post and on MSNBC. He was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 1981. The Friends of Literature awarded him the first James Friend Memorial Critic Award in 1988 and the Chicago Foundation for Literature Award for Nonfiction in 1991 for What?s That Pig Outdoors? In 1991 Trinity College awarded him a honorary Doctor of Letters degree. In 2001 he was inducted into the Chicago Journalism Hall of Fame. About the book: Whether dashing through the Plains, creeping over the Rockies, hurtling across the Great Basin, or threading the Sierra Nevada, the California Zephyr is an earthbound cruise ship bearing five hundred souls, each with a story to tell. Within its eighteen cars one hears tales of trysts in showers and sleepers, of charming serendipities in dining cars, of smuggling drugs and pets (including an elusive boa constrictor), and of a small child's tragic death on the tracks. The California Zephyr remains America's most exhilarating transcontinental train, traversing breath-taking mountain scenery and retracing the route of countless westering pioneers. Veteran journalist Henry Kisor climbs aboard this train and introduces us to the men and women who ride the rails - some out of restlessness, some as a hobby, some seeking love or friendship as they open new frontiers in their deeper selves. And of course there are the resourceful train crews, who tell tales of "dog-robbing" supplies in the yards, of coping with medical emergencies en route, and of keeping their good humor over the train's 51-hour run. The Zephyr's route is a passage of surprising connections, as the grand history of railroads, terminals, luxury limiteds, and western bandits exists side by side with contemporary concerns. Through Kisor's eyes, we participate in all the events that make a train trip magical. Signed by Author.

Binding tight and solid. In 1983, beloved Caldecott-winning illustrator, Chris Van Allsburg, first invited readers to peer over the edge of a cliff to consider the wreck of a small sailboat. Had a churning sea carried the Zephyr up in a storm? Could waves ever have been so impossibly high? And what of the boy who had believeddared to chase the windno matter where it lead? The winds have shifted once again and you're invited back to the wreck of the Zephyr, to hear the story of the boy and his obsession to become the world's greatest sailor, and a storm that carried them to a place where boats sail on the wind, instead of on the water.
