Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Still in original plastic wrap - both book and jacket appear fine. "Walter Royal Davis (1920-2008) was a Texas oil tycoon and philanthropist originally from Elizabeth City, North Carolina. He was also an influential figure in state politics and higher education. Davis Library, the main library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill since it opened in 1984, is named for him, he having been a trustee at the university for 16 years. He died at his home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, at the age of 88. He also had a home in Midland, Texas. Davis was also a major donor to the Dean Smith Center, which opened in 1986 and is still the home court of the UNC-Chapel Hill men's basketball team, and a scholarship program for students who agreed to teach in poor counties in northeastern North Carolina. In 1999 during a trustee meeting, then UNC-Chapel Hill student body president Nic Heinke asked his fellow board members to give a donation to Hurricane Floyd relief efforts. Heinke passed around his baseball cap and came up with $400 in donations from trustees. When the hat got to Davis, he dropped in a check for $100,000. Then at age 79, Davis had to ask a fellow trustee to fill out the check because his eyesight was poor. He asked that the money go to displaced students at hard-hit East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. In the spring of 1999, Reyna Walters, student body president at UNC-Chapel Hill, chatted with Davis about her plan to earn money over the summer for a trip to Europe. He said he would make the trip happen, and soon after, a $10,000 check for Walters arrived from Davis. He was also known to leave five-thousand-dollar tips for struggling clerks and waitresses.".

Seller: Antique Books International, Savannah, GA, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Good. Special Edition. Offered here is the 1933 facsimile reprint of "DE VENARUM OSTIOLIS" from 1603 written by Hieronymus Fabricius. Published in 1933 Baillière, Tindall and Cox (London), totalling roughly 98 pages. This copy shows wear at spine but is internally quite nice and overall a good clean copy. It provides the first detailed, illustrated description of venous valves, influencing the discovery of blood circulation by Fabricius' pupil, William Harvey. It was the first, and historically significant, systematic study of the structure and function of venous valves. While Fabricius was the first to properly describe them, he misunderstood their primary purpose, believing they were designed to slow blood flow to prevent vein damage, rather than for circulation regulation. "Hieronymus Fabricius ab Aquapendente was the Latin name for Girolamo Fabritio, an anatomist and surgeon who taught for many years in Padua. He had been the pupil of Gabriele Falloppio, who, in turn, had been the pupil of Vesalius. And Fabricius was tutor to William Harvey, who elaborated on the work of his teacher in at least two important instances. Arguably, the greatest contribution of Fabricius was the discovery of what he called "valves" in the veins of the arms and legs. This concept enabled Harvey to postulate the circulation of the blood. Fabricius published his De venarum ostiolis in 1603 as an unbound folio pamphlet accompanied by eight engraved plates, which has been described as one of the most beautiful works in the history of anatomy. One plate, showing the valves in the veins of an arm, was adapted by William Harvey for his work on blood circulation. The writings of Fabricius contain important treatises on the structure of the eye and in the field of embryology. Harvey also used Fabricius's work on the formation of the chick as the basis for his own book on embryology." This copy shows wear at spine but is internally quite nice and overall a good clean copy.
