One of the earliest volumes of the Utrecht students' almanac, and the first to be edited by the students themselves. The almanac was published annually from 1823 until 1996. From 1882 onwards, the almanac was a report of the activities of the Utrechtsch Studenten Corps (Utrecht student society). In the early years, however, it was a typical almanac, with the calendar, opening and closing of the city gates, times tables of ferries and coaches, etc., but it also included extra information for students, such as a short history of the university, a list of the professors and board members, a complete list of the 395 students with their addresses, a Series Lectionem, and short stories and poems. The edges and corners of the boards are scuffed and the joints are very slightly weakened. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf. De Utrechtsche Universiteit 1636-1936, vol. III: Het Utrechtsch Studentenleven ('De Corpsbijbel') (1936), p. 576. Original publisher's green boards, with the title printed on the front, and the logo of the University of Utrecht hand drawn on the back. With an engraved title page with the logo of the University of Utrecht. Pages: [2], 127, [1 blank] pp.

Rare and remarkable periodical, published by the Palestine National Liberation Movement or Fatah. This was a revolutionary group, and later a political party, founded in 1957 by Yasser Arafat (1929-2004), Khalil al-Wazir (1935-1988) and 3 or 4 others. The movement published numerous periodicals and pamphlets between 1968-1972, but Fateh is the most important one. Originally published in Arabic, it was also issued in English from 1969 (bi-weekly), in French from 1970 (monthly) and in Italian from 1971 (bi-weekly). We have not been able to find any other English issues of this periodical for sale anywhere else. The name of the group, Fatah, is an acronym in reverse for "Harakat al-Tahrir al-Watani al-Filastini", the Arabic translation of "Palestine National Liberation Movement". The intention of the founders was to create an organisation that was independent of governments and political parties, with the goal to liberate Palestine through low-intensity guerilla warfare. It was part of several armed fights with Israeli and Jordan forces during the 1960s and 70s. Fatah modelled itself after the revolutionary groups of Algeria, Vietnam and Cuba. On page 9 of the present issue of Fateh a large photo has been printed of a group of protesters holding signs with the images of the leaders of these revolutions, which is a clear message to the reader. The present issue of Fateh, contains numerous articles with news from or about Palestine and the movement. It was printed a few months after Black September, the bloody clash between Fatah and the Jordanian army in 1970, during which thousands of Palestines were either killed or expelled from Jordan. The first few pages of the periodical are dedicated to this event and other clashes between the two groups that resulted from it. Other articles discuss a 10-hour battle near Tel Aviv, the relationship between America and Israel, and injustices against Palestinians. Of particular interest are the three powerful full-page illustrations. They were designed in 1970 and issued separately as posters. The first image, of a rifle with an olive branch, was designed by Natheer Naba'a, who is only known for his posters for Fateh. The second image, called "stolen smile", shows a photo of a group of determined children and was designed by Jassem el Zubeidy, who is only known for this design. The last image is an illustration of a Palestinian woman with a moving text about Palestine, designed by Palestinian artist Kamal Boullata (1942-2019).The periodical is somewhat browned and inkstained, and the edges are slightly frayed. Otherwise in good condition.l The English language Fateh periodical is present in ca. 30 libraries worldwide, not all possess all volumes issued 1969-1971, see WorldCat 1568957, 145144012, 72895793, 1036673977, 924471377, 898713265; cf. Interactive encyclopedia of the Palestine question, entry: the Palestinian national liberation movement; Periodicals in review: periodicals and pamphlets published by the Palestinian commando organisations. In: Journal of Palestine studies, vol. 1 (1) , 1971, pp. 136-151. Numerous black-and-white (photographic) illustrations. Pages: 24 pp.

Late (last?) edition of one of the better known works on hydrotherapy and the therapeutic use of mineral waters, concentrating on the baths of Spa, known already in Roman times and iconic for the history of the wide spread phenomenon of 'Taking the waters', 'balneotherapy', or 'hydrotherapy'.Henri de Heers (1570-1636) was a physician from Liege who first published his Spadacrene, hoc est Fons Spadanus in Latin in 1614. After many editions in both Latin and French, another physician from Liege, Werner Chouet edited a corrected and enlarged French edition in 1739 in The Hague (our copy). Chouet was an expert who had written a study on the waters of Spa and other places himself: La connoisance des eaux minerals d'Aix-la-Chapelle, de Chaud-Fontaine, & de Spa (1714). To the present edition of Heers' book he added not only his own remarks and commentaries, but also the Latin annotations Heers had entered in his first Latin edition. With the bookplate of the Library of the Medical Society of the County of Kings, dated 1909, on the front paste-down and two library stamps of this library on the title-page. With an owner's inscription of "Dr. Fries" on the first free endpaper. Manuscript spine label gone, corners bumped, some loss of the paper of the binding around the spine and corners. Otherwise in good condition.l Hirsch III, p.110. Red paper over boards, paper piece with the number "2956" on the spine. Title printed in red and black, with woodcut title-vignette, initials and ornamental head- and tailpieces. Pages: [14], 252, [6] pp.

3 parts in 1 volume. Original edition of this learned but little known edition of the Phaedrus fables in Latin verses on the basis of the Burman edition of 1718, together with a very extended commentary. The editor Johann Gottlob Samuel Schwabe (1746-1835) was professor at the Gymnasium in Weimar and librarian. He is most known for this edition of Phaedrus which ran through at least four editions (1806, 1822 and 1826). Schwabe not only added his own abundant notes and comments, but inserted also (1) his notes to the Vita by Scheffer, (2) important lists of manuscripts, editions and translations of Phaedrus, (3) a treatise by Johann Georg Sulzer (see below), (4) the unpublished notes on Phaedrus by the mysterious Jacobus Tollius (1633-1696), the former secretary of Nicolas Heinsius, rector of the Latin School in Gouda and professor in Duisburg, as well as (5) his own Dissertatio de eo, quod pulchrum est in Phaedro.Binding slightly bumped with wormhole in back cover, ownership's entry on title of the first part cut out (repaired but with loss of text).l Schwabe/Barbier, 109-110; not in Bodemann, nor Fabula docet. Three-quarter calf over boards, ribbed spine tooled and lettered in gold, marbled endpapers, edge painted red. With some woodcut headpieces. Pages: LXXX, 208; XXII, 312; XX, 254, [6] pp.

Third part of Freya Stark's (1893-1993) autobiography, in which she describes her life and especially her travels she undertook between 1933 and 1939. During this time, her first 4 works were published, starting with The Valley of the Assassins in 1934. The present work mostly focuses on Stark's travels in South Arabia and is illustrated with images of photographs she took herself. It is a very personal account of her life in general and travel experiences, alongside significant historical, political, geographical and anthropological information about the places she visited. This writing style was quite unique and unusual for her time, but since she was one of the first European travellers in parts of Southern Arabia "unique and unusual" were, in a positive way, accurate descriptors.Edge at the head of the book is green and the edge at the foot is untrimmed. Small marking in blue ink on p. 79, lacking dust jacket, otherwise in very good condition.l Blackmer 1470; Howgego IV, S61; Shapero, The Islamic World (2003), 458. cf. "Freya Stark". Encyclopaedia Britannica. Green cloth with gold lettering on spine. With 1 map of the Hadhramaut printed on green paper, 20 double-sided plates, 3 illustrations in the text on pp. 76, 77 and 85, a few small tail pieces throughout, and a green ornament on the title-page. Second - much enlarged - edition of Gould's Report on the Invertebrata of Massachusetts which first appeared in 1841. It was the first monograph published in the United States that attempted to describe the entire molluskan fauna of a geographical region. The book, one of the most important monuments of Gould's scientific work, greatly encouraged the study of mollusks in the United States and was illustrated with more than 200 figures drawn by Gould himself, who states "Every species described, indeed almost every species mentioned, has passed under my own eye. The descriptions of species previously known, have been written anew; partly, that they may be more minute in particulars, and party, with the hope of using language somewhat less technical than is ordinarily employed by scientific men". Binding shows very minor signs of wear, minor tear in the inner margin (near the spine) of the title-page, without affecting the title or other information on the page, pp. 517-520 loose, with ownership's entry of William Henry Waitt (1819-1878), dated 1870. Overall in very good condition.l Nissen, ZBI, 1660a. cf. Dict. of American biogr., VII (1931), pp. 446-117; Encycl. Britt., 12 (11th ed.), p. 284; J. Scarce edition of the Nederlandsche Muzen-almanak, the most successful literary almanac published in the Netherlands in the 19th century. The present edition includes works by Bilderdijk (Afscheid, first edition), J. and A.N. van Pellecom, N. Beets, J.G. de Hoop Scheffer, J. J. L. Ten Kate, and Petronella Moens. The almanac was published annually by artist, author, and publisher Johannes Immerzeel Jr. (1776-1841) from 1819 until 1840, who also contributed to the contents himself. The hinges are weakened, but have been repaired with a strip of paper.
