A small corner chip, and few edge tears, but basically in good condition. Musical notation in black within, and in red on rear page. ".Sol Bloom (March 9, 1870 - March 7, 1949) was an American song-writer and politician from New York City who began his career as an entertainment impresario and sheet music publisher in Chicago. He served fourteen terms in the United States House of Representatives from the West Side of Manhattan, from 1923 until his death in 1949. Bloom was the chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee from 1939 to 1947 and again in 1949, during a critical period of American foreign policy. . Bloom was especially concerned with the fate of European Jews but was unable to overcome very strong resistance to admitting Jews or any refugees before the war. He argued vigorously after the war that the United States needed to take in larger numbers of refugees. He adopted the Zionist position that mandated Palestine should become the refuge for Jewish victims of the Holocaust. He urgently lobbied President Harry Truman in 1948 to immediately recognize the Jewish state of Israel, which Truman did." (Wikipedia). Bloom also penned the ditty singsonged by young boys even up through the 1950s ("Oh they don't wear Pants in the Sunny Side of France"). Musical Supplement to the San Francisco Examiner.

Hardcover. Condition: Good Only. First Edition. 8vo. Black cloth with Maugham's beehive motif embossed to front board. Gilt lettering, with decorative floral design to spine, somewhat faded. Corners bumped, especially lower right front board. Round stamp of Oxford Bookshop to rear pastedown. Both endpapers show discoloration. Nice, clean solid reading copy. Maugham entitled this collection of short stories The Mixture as Before, deriving the name from a review of his previous collection, the headline for which was, "The Mixture as Before". Maugham writes: "After pursuing the art of fiction for over forty years, I have a notion that I know a good deal more about it than most people. In that long period Ihave seen a number of bright stars creep shyly over the. horizon, travel across the. sky to burn for a while in midheaven with dazzling effulgence, and then dwindle into an obscurity from which there is little likelihood that they will ever again emerge. The writer has his special communication to make, which when you come to analyze it is the personality with which he is endowed by nature, and during the early years of his activity he is groping in the dark to express it; then, if he is fortunate, he succeeds in doing this, and if there is in his personality a certain abundance he may continue for along time to produce work which is varied and characteristic; but the time comes at last (if he is so imprudent as to live to a ripe age) when, having given what he has to give, his powers seem to fail. He has fashioned all the stories. he himself is capable of digging out of the inexhaustible mine which is human nature, and he has created all the characters which can possibly be constituted out of the various sides of his personality. I have now written between eighty and ninety stories, I shall not write any more; I am quite satisfied if the readers of htis collection, should they remember any of those I have written in the past, agree that I have not been overbold in giving it the title I have." He explores the origins of wiretapping in military campaigns and criminal confidence games and tracks the use of telephone taps in the US government's wars on alcohol, communism, terrorism, and crime. While high-profile eavesdropping scandals fueled public debates about national security, crime control, and the rights and liberties of individuals, wiretapping became a routine surveillance tactic for private businesses and police agencies alike."
