Robert Sterling Clark, (1877-1956), by virtue of a handsome inheritance, became a collector of fine art. He established the institute which bears his and his wife's names, in 1955. The collection includes works by dozens of world class artists, including 37 by Renoir, his favorite. The collection also includes sculpture, porcelains, prints, silver, and drawings from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century.

From the Preface: "The word liberty which I have with some reluctance chosen to stand as the title of this book, means so many things that it often means almost nothing. Frost, (1874-1963), although born in San Francisco, is best remembered for his verse dealing with New England life and character. He received the Pulitzer Prize in 1924, 1931, 1937, and 1943, for respectively: NEW HAMPSHIRE, (in which my favorite, Stopping By Woods On a Snowy Evening appears); COLLECTED POEMS; A FURTHER RANGE; and A WITNESS TREE.

"The two new plants described below were collected by Mr. Roland M. Harper in the course of his extended study of the flora of Georgia. The new genus, which I have founded upon one of them and have named in Mr. Harper's honor, is a very peculiar one. The fruit much resembles that of Carum, while the leaves are reduced to hollow-jointed phyllodia somewhat like those of Oxypolis filiformis, but in other respects the plant is unlike both.".

In 1887, when James Whitcomb Riley was relatively unknown, he was invited to speak, almost by happenstance, at a program headed by James Russell Lowell. Reading last, he outshone the other speakers: Lowell, Mark Twain, Edward Eggleston, Richard Henry Stockton, and George W. Cable, and received a standing ovation and was invited back for the next day's readings. It is said that this program marked the beginning of Riley's prominence on the national stage.

Remainder mark at bottom edges. Mitchell Kennerley, (1878-1950), a legendary figure in the world of books, had his successes and his failures. He was a magazine publisher at the age of twenty three, the head of his own publishing house at twenty eight, and the president of Anderson Auction Galleries at thirty seven. Probably no one else was so involved in so many aspects of literature and antiquarian books. But, in his sixties, he was an obscure figure living in poverty, and at age 71 he committed suicide.

The author, although a loyal Democrat, had the reputation of being impartial, so much so that he was asked by Henry Hyde to serve as Chief Investigative Counsel for the House Judiciary Committee. In this book, he reveals: Which Democrats never bothered to examine the evidence; Why Democrats and Republicans conspired to conceal the most damning evidence of impeachable, even criminal, offenses; How a note handwritten by the President himself offers evidence of perjury; How Clinton tried to keep his women quiet; How the author unraveled a conspiracy involving immigrants hurriedly naturalized for Democratic votes - a program run from the office of Al Gore; and much more. One of the notable achievements of the Clinton spinmeisters, with the help of the media, was to convince the American people that Clinton's offenses were only related to sex. It will be interesting to see all the good stuff we never heard about, if and/or when the records are ever unsealed.

Louis Kossuth, in 1851, was revered by many as the greatest living man. He was an attorney, a student of languages, newspaper editor, finance minister, and governor of Hungary. He had led the Hungarian Revolutionh against Austria. In the United States, Kossuth's revolution had enlisted the sympathies of the people to an extent that was unprecedented.

The author contends that one may see the great towns, the cathedrals, the universities, and the museums, of England, but will not experience what is most characteristic and delightful in English life until he has visited often in English or Scottish country houses.

In report covers. May include a first or last copied page. Karl Kron, the pseudonym of LYman Hotchkiss Bagg, (1846 - 1911) wrote a book, TEN THOUSAND MILES ON A BICYCLE, published in 1877. This article from Chapter 26, titled Bull Run, Luray Cavern and Gettysburg, is about bicycle trips he took in 1884 and 1885 in Virginia, Maryland, and Southern Pennsylvania.
