The first panel (adhered to the case) is entitled "Birds-eye View of Bar Harbor, Mt Desert, Me.," depicting a fairly well-developed tourist destination. Other views include the Grand Central Hotel, Dog Mountain, Balance Rock, Otter Cliffs, the Cliffs on Burnt Porcupine and Saul Beach Mountain. Inside the back cover of the case is an advertisement for J.I. Mackey, Manufacturer and Dealer in Florida Novelties and Alligator Teeth. Mr. Mackey apparently had locations in Old Orchard Beach and Bar Harbor, Maine, as well as Florida. Red leatherette case of 3 1/2 x 5 1/4" is embossed in gold with "Souvenir of Mt. Desert." Eleven panels of black and white views of area hotels and attractions fold out of the case in a long strip. The image area of each panel is about 2 1/4 x 4." Minor stains in the margin of a couple of the panels. Overall, very good. …

Ayer's American Almanac was published in Lowell from about 1856 through 1923. OCLC locates scattered holdings of the German editions of the almanac, although none is specifically identified as the 1877 edition. Yellow printed wrapper with just a hint of soiling.
