cloth, dust jacket. Grew, Nehemiah (illustrator). 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. xvii, 182 pages. First edition. Nehemiah Grew was a pioneer in exploring the physiology of plants and the comparative anatomy of animals. He was an active Fellow of the Royal Society and one of its busiest officers in its first great period during the 1670s. Born in Warwickshire in 1641, he was educated at Cambridge and practiced as a physician in the City of London where he died in 1712. William LeFanu's pioneer study of Grew's work surveys writings on many subjects but primarily his publications in botany and chemistry. Most notable among these are The Anatomy of Plants(1682) - a landmark in the literature of botany and Grew's most influential work - and his catalogue of the Royal Society's Museum (1681).

cloth, dust jacket. Dictionary of National Biography (illustrator). thick 8vo. cloth, dust jacket. xli, 413 pages. First edition. One hundred years after its first publication, the DNB is still a valuable source of biographical information on over 30,000 famous names. With the continuing interest in the Victorian era the contributors themselves - over 600 of them - are now of as much importance as the subjects they wrote about. This is the first guide to the contributors: authors, academics, recognized authorities on their subjects, and, in many cases, young writers making their first appearance in print. This index lists contributors and their articles alphabetically, giving names, dates, DNB volume number, and page reference. Unsigned articles are listed separately.

cloth, paper spine label. 8vo. cloth, paper spine label. xii, 198, (2) pages. Edited and with commentary by Joyce Lancester Wilson. Limited to 850 copies and printed from Monotype Ehrhardt at the press of W. Thomas Taylor. Adrian Wilson (1923-1988) was internationally known as a designer and printer of fine books. During his career, he produced over 200 titles, authored a standard text, The Design of Books for his field, wrote two important scholarly books on early printing and manuscripts, and inspired the friendship of a wide circle of fellow bibliophiles around the world. Less well-known is that Wilson was a conscientious objector during the Second World War and that he learned the rudiments of printing in a work camp at Waldport, Oregon, to which he was assigned. When Wilson left home to attend Wesleyan University in September 1941, he began to write long, intimate letters to his parents, almost daily, describing his life at college, his growing involvement with pacifists there and his struggle to decide on a course of action. These letters are now published for the first time here in this work designed by Jerry Kelly and printed from Monotype Ehrhardt at the Press of W. Thomas Taylor.

By focusing on the furniture, books, clothes, toys and games used by children in addition to the stories told about growing up in early America, the book explores the changing perceptions of childhood in America.
