8vo, original yellow wraps, lettered in white and black on the covers and spine. xv, 207 (one advertisement). A very good copy. Freud's renowned work, TOTEM AND TABOO, reflects the concern of his time to study "civilization" in contrast to more "primitive" cultures. Freud argues that in reflecting upon notions of totemism in early culture and taboo up until the present time, certain patterns will emerge to explain childhood and ultimately, adult behavior. He states that "in this book the attempt is ventured to find the original meaning of totemism through its infantile traces, that is, through the indications in which it reappears in the development of our own children. The close connection between totem and taboo indicates the further paths to the hypothesis maintained here." Significant not only for understanding the early work of Freud and the birth of psychoanalysis but also the post war period in Germany and the intellectual concern with the notion of what "civilization" means.

A superb sequence of 43 new poems published the same year Hughes was made Poet Laureate of England, a post he served till his death in 1998. Interestingly, the American edition is less common then the British and of the American edition the issue in wrappers is less common then the hard cover. One of England's most popular poets of his generation, here in America he is perhaps better remembered for his marriage to American poet Sylvia Plath.

First edition, number 15 of the Ariel Poems. With cover design, page boarders and a colour pictorial frontispeace by Edward Bawden. Pamphlet, original yellow paper wrappers vividly decorated in black on upper wrap, wrappers stiched with thin thread. 2 leaves. A well preserved copy of this delicate printing, the wrapper partially separated along spine and minorly toned. Edith Sitwell is regarded as one of the great promoters of the Modernist movement in literature. She despised much of the work published in GEORGIAN POETRY and therefore began editing WHEELS, an anti-Georgian literary magazine. She quickly developed a reputation as an eccentric and controversial figure. Her poetry and prose was published extensively between 1915 and 1947. By the early 1950s changes in the Movement caused her to fall out of favor, but she remained a considerable public figure inside and outside of literary circles until her death in 1964. This is one of the Ariel Poems, a numbered series of works by new poets. The series included works by such notibles as T.S. Eliot, Edmund Blunden and Thomas Hardy.

First Edition in English. 8vo, publisher's original blue cloth lettered in gilt over red on the spine and upper cover. 97. A very nice and desirable copy, internally very fine and nearing pristine, the blue cloth a bit mellowed along the edges but still quite fresh, small stain on rear board. A HIGHLY IMPORTANT WORK IN THE PSYCHOLOGICAL OEUVRE. Sartre's prime contention, of great significance at the time and an anchor to the whole manner of existentialist thinking on human psychology was that the action is occasioned both by thought and by emotion, at one time led by the one and at other times, by the other. This is arguably one of Sartre's most important books and is a pleasing and intellectually stimulating read.
