Item description from seller

very good green cloth. LAID IN: green publisher's descriptive card with original price $15.00. INGARDEN, ROMAN. The cognition of the literary work of art. Translated by Ruth Ann Crowley and Kenneth R. Olson. Evanston: Northwestern University Press, 1973, xxx, 436pp., . Series: Northwestern University studies in phenomenology & existential philosophy. - Translation of Vom Erkennen des literarischen Kunstwerks. - While the focus of Ingarden’s The Literary Work of Art is primarily ontological, The Cognition of the Literary Work of Art (published six years later) is primarily epistemological in nature. Ingarden seeks to determine what features must be present in an experience if it is to qualify as a cognitive experience of a literary work. The central problems treated in this thoroughgoing phenomenological investigation are: the operations or functions which must belong to any kind of cognitive activity having a literary work as its object, as well as the characteristics of any literary work which demand such operations; the temporal perspective of the reader on the work and on the world portrayed in the work; the difference between a scientific work and a literary work of art; the various modes of cognition of literary works of art; and an evaluation, within the framework of a critique of knowledge, of the results which various modes of cognition yield. Ruth Ann Crowley is an Instructor in the Department of German at Queens College, and Kenneth R. Olson is a doctoral student of German at Stanford University. 9780810104242 ISBN 0810104245.
