Lucas leads the teenage killers, claiming a disaster is coming and sacrifices are necessary, but outsider Victoria and her friend Hailey doubt his motives and must try to survive long enough to escape. Brisson and Christmas add a sinister twist to the highly popular dystopian-apocalyptic theme in this fresh new series. Though the other characters can sometimes blend together, smart and resourceful Victoria is a standout and a terrific audience stand-in, serving as the lone voice of reason amid violent panic. Christmas can go over the top when drawing emotional scenes, but his teens look like real teenagers, and the realistic color palette makes the blood and muzzle blasts pop. These elements, along with the increasing destabilization of Lucas’ command and the efficiency of the children’s cold-blooded violence, build tension right up to the end, leaving readers eager for the next installment. --Snow Wildsmith
