[African American] [Comic Books] Superman vs. Muhammad Ali. New York: DC Comics Inc., 1978. First Edition. 72 pages. Measures 10" x 13.25". Cover art by Neal Adams. Superman vs. Muhammad Ali is an oversize celebrity comic book featuring a storyline in which Superman teams up with the heavyweight boxing champion Muhammad Ali to defeat an alien invasion of Earth, ultimately requiring the two to compete in a boxing match with Superman deprived of his superpowers to determine Earth's true champion. This comic marked the first time Superman teamed up with an African American cultural icon. Writer Neal Adams later said: "DC Comics had a lot of liberal New York young Jewish men working for them at the time, who understood prejudice. And to depict Ali as on par with a white mythical Superman, was a subtle political act." Wrap-around cover art features a vibrant and vintage illustration of Ali and Superman in the ring together with a celebrity-filled audience including the faces of The Beatles, The Jackson 5, Orson Welles, Jimmy Carter, Pele, Don King and several other celebrities and comic book characters. An expressive cover with full-color illustrations throughout including oversized panels. Binding is tight with only minor wear around the edges. In very good condition. Seller Inventory # 21421
