Item description from seller
This 1790 French edition of Les commentaires de César by Julius Caesar, translated and edited by Henry Homer and Samuel Clarke, presents a landmark Enlightenment-era interpretation of Rome’s military campaigns. Contained within a two-volume 12mo format, the edition includes the full text of De Bello Gallico and Aulus Hirtius’ continuation Bellum Alexandrinum. Of particular note are the four double-page engraved maps, often separated from other examples but here fully intact. These cartographic plates are highly desirable among collectors of antique maps and Roman history. The publisher, M. Ritchie & J. Sammells, issued this volume in London despite the French text, reflecting international scholarly exchange in the late 18th century. Very Good condition, with tight leather bindings and only mild age-toning, minimal foxing, and solid hinges. Collation: Vol 1: 442 pp; Vol 2: 441 pp. Format: Duodecimo (12mo), two-volume set. Illustrations: 4 double-page engraved maps. References: Lowndes 345–46. #29742. PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.
