8vo, pp. [4], 292, [2], 384; contemporary and probably original marbled paper-covered boards, cream paper shelfback, green printed paper label on spine, textblock unopened; spine a little toned and worn at head, library shelf marks on front pastedown, small stain on 2m1, light toning of the text; all else very good and sound. The Complaint was originally written in 1548 as a work of propaganda during the war of Rough Wooing. It is an important source for the Scots language, and has the oldest instance of many Scots words, including axis, barbarian, buffoon, cabinet, crackling, decadence, excrement, heroic, humid, imbecile, moo, parallel, robust, suffocation, superb, timid and water-lily.
