The Complaint was originally written in 1548 as a work of propaganda during the war of Rough Wooing. It is an important source for the Scots language, and has the oldest instance of many Scots words, including axis, barbarian, buffoon, cabinet, crackling, decadence, excrement, heroic, humid, imbecile, moo, parallel, robust, suffocation, superb, timid and water-lily.
