Abridged edition, 4to, pp. [2], xi, [1], 299, [1]; original printed wrappers backed in black cloth; nibbling to lower corner on first 10 leaves plus some spotting, corners bumped, contemporary library stamp and owner's signature of G. P. Foster on title page, text clean, good. First published in 1892, this edition was shrunk to 100 lessons for the benefit of "busy modern workers." Mateer was founder of Tengchow College, considered the first modern college in China.
