Soliday catalogue of books relating to the Northwestern region of the United States and Canada was issued under my imprint. Although envisaged as a commercial venture wherein Mr. Soliday?s books might be sold at the prices then prevailing, it was not until the fourth part of the catalogue was printed and distributed that I was solicited by numerous booksellers, collectors and librarians to supply an index to all the four parts. As I had held back only 100 copies each of the four parts, ail index which would exceed more than one hundred double column pages seemed to me at the time, to be unrealistic. My first reaction was to decline the suggestion to make the index and underwrite its printing and publication. It was not until I sought the advice of the late Lathrop C. Harper, Edward W. Eberstadt, Roland Tree of Henry Stevens, Son and Stiles, and Wright Howes, the historically minded bookseller of Chicago, that I was induced to go through with the project. It had not immediately occurred to me that the Soliday collection, while it contained the usual voyages to Northwest Coast and the obvious Overlands which had been aptly annotated previously, did also comprise a large group of important but less scarce books relating to American travel, which had not been described in one volume elsewhere. Also, there was a large segment of valuable Russian historical literature relating to the Northwest Coast that had only been sparsely offered prior to the appearance of the Soliday Catalogue. These then were the compelling factors that influenced me in my decision to go ahead with the project. This publication, per se, was not originally intended to be a commercial undertaking. The index to all four parts entailed a cost of more than one thousand dollars, and the buckram bindings, three dollars and fifty cents per volume. The one hundred copies, which were all I had available, were sold out almost immediately at seven dollars and fifty cents each. Fortunately, I kept one copy for myself. And now, down through the years hardly a week or month goes by, that I do not receive an inquiry or order for this catalogue. The prices, as of other historical and bibliographical material, have greatly increased. So it is with considerable satisfaction to me that the Antiquarian Press Ltd. has offered to make this book available again for booksellers, librarians and collectors. Seller Inventory # 20160109002
