About this Item
Second Edition of one of the scarcer Darwin titles, one of only 1,250 copies, with a new preface, in which Darwin states that "the text has been left as it originally appeared excepting that a few errors have been corrected." According to Freeman, "This is then the definitive text." 8vo: xvi,352,32(advertisements)pp, with 15 woodcuts in the text and 38 tables. Publisher's standard green pebbled cloth, covers paneled in blind, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, brown end papers. Inserted advertisements may be as late as January 1882, per Freeman. A Fine copy, completely unopened. Freeman 1280. Darwin recalled the writing of this title in his autobiography: "This book consists chiefly of the several papers on heterostyled flowers, originally published by the Linnean Society, corrected, with much new matter added, together with observations on some other cases in which the same plant bears two kinds of flowers. As before remarked, no little discovery of mine ever gave me so much pleasure as the making out the meaning of heterostyled flowers. The results of crossing such flowers in an illegitimate manner, I believe to be very important as bearing on the sterility of hybrids; although these results have been noticed by only a few persons." N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Seller Inventory # BB1558
