Pohlsander naci� en Alemania, se doctor� en la Universidad de Michigan y fue profesor en el College of Arts and Sciences (University at Albany, New York) desde 1962 hasta 1995. Ha investigado especialmente el nacionalismo alem�n del siglo XIX y el desarrollo del Imperio Romano. Entre sus obras destacan: Helena: Empress and Saint, y National Monuments and Nationalism in 19th Century Germany.
