First two leaves are the title and an introductory statement by John C. Calhoun. Pages are clean and intact overall but have light age toning and moderate wear to extremities. This is a very brief document containing correspondence by Calhoun and four statements showing "the names of the persons who have received public money for paying the troops in service, during the late war [War of 1812], and who have failed to render their accounts." The statements are credited to Third Auditor of the U.S. Treasury Peter Hagner. Calhoun also explains that this document relates to an inquiry by the House of Representatives to the Secretary of War requesting "information whether any of the paymasters of the armies of the United States, during the late war [War of 18112], have failed to perform their duty, in making their returns and settlements, and the names of such delinquents, and the reason why coercive measures have not been used to compel a performance of duty." John C. Calhoun (1782-1850) was an American politician. He served as the 7th Vice President of the United States from 1825-1832, a U.S. Senator from South Carolina from 1833-1842 and 1845-1850, a U.S. Representative from South Carolina from 1811-1817, Secretary of State from 1844-1845 under Presidents John Tyler and James K. Polk, and Secretary of War under President James Monroe from 1817-1825. Peter Hagner (1772-1850) was an American civil servant who worked in the accounting office of the U.S. War Department. As noted in this publication, Hagner worked as Third Auditor of the U.S. Department of the Treasury at the time.
