Excellent Compendium of Musick: with Necessary and Judicious Animadversions Thereupon, by a Person of Honour, Rene Descartes, Printed by Thomas Harper for Humphrey Moseley, London, 1653, 58 pp, 94 pp, illustrated, half leather modern w/ marbled boards, 6.25 x 8.25 , 8vo. In good condition. Later binding with fresh endpapers. Boards show typical wear with light fading to marbled paper. Interior text typically toned with light foxing. Numerical notations (musical?) in old hand written on title page, otherwise unmarked. Engravings bright and clean. Binding tight and intact. Well preserved. Overall, a nice copy! Please see photos. First English edition of Descartes earliest surviving work with numerous woodcuts, three engraved plates. Two parts in one volume. Amazing illustrations of musical notes, staffs, and various charts relating to music theory. Also with a detailed and attractive engraving of a lute. The translator, the Person of Honour refers to Lord Brouncker. Descartes study of mathematical basis of music was also an examination of methodology: the application of empirical, deductive, and scientific approaches to the study of sensory perception.
