He was the author of several controversial works. Anguis Flagellatus: or, A Switch for the Snake. Being an Answer to the Third and Last Edition of the Snake in the Grass was a response to Charles Leslie's (1650-1722) The Snake in the Grass: or, Satan transform'd not an angel of light. Discovering the deep and unsuspected subtlety which is couched under the pretended simplicity of many of the principal leaders of those people call'd Quakers (1696). Of all the attacks upon early Quakerism, Leslie's "Snake in the Grass" provoked the most replies. This first edition includes a preface by George Whitehead (1636-1723), who was a leading early Quaker preacher, author and lobbyist remember for his advocacy of religious freedom before three kings of England. His lobbying in defense of the right to practice the Quaker religion was influential on the Act of Uniformity, the Bill of Rights of 1689 and the Royal Declaration of Indulgence. His writings are both biographical and ideological in nature, examining the Quaker way of life. Important and scarce Quaker work - first edition - a reading copy. FORN-SHELF-0461-BB-2409-HKREV17.
