First Edition, Original Binding, [4]; xvi; 500 pp; 32 plates + frontispiece (COMPLETE), 8.25 x 5.25", 8vo. In poor condition. As is. Both front and rear boards detached from binding. Boards scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine chipped. Title label & gilt lettering dulled & soiled, but still legible. Leather on spine is cracked & creased; gilt ruling mostly rubbed away. Gift inscription found on front end-page: "Presented to Hannah M. Peterson by her father J. Bouvier Esq, Nov. 25. 1837." Age-staining found on fore-edge throughout text-block; not including plates in rear. Top edge of title page lacking. Top edge & corner of dedication page repaired with fresher paper. Normal age-related toning throughout text-block; mostly around edges of leaves. All fold-outs intact - some are chipped at fore-edges. Fold-outs exhibit off-setting on adjacent pages. Fold-outs toned at creases, & some exhibit age-staining but all remain attractive. Rear fly-leaf and end-page detached. Binding of text-block is intact; boards detached. Please see photos. George Adams the younger (1750-1795) was an English scientist, optician and scientific writer. He was mathematical instrument maker to King George III of Great Britain, succeeding his father George Adams in the post. He also made globes. Around 1770, Adams invented the lucernal microscope, a type of projection microscope where the image is projected on a screen by a large oil lamp, as to make it easier to draw or trace the image. Adams wrote elementary scientific works, and on the use of mathematical instruments. John Bouvier (1787-1851) was a French-American jurist and legal lexicographer, is known for his legal writings, particularly his Law Dictionary Adapted to the Constitution and Laws of the United States of America and of the Several States o the American Union (1839). It is believed to be the first legal dictionary to be based on American law, and is still in publication. Women's rights and suffragettes Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton cited Bouvier for contributing to passage in Pennsylvania of the Married Woman's Property Act of 1848. First Edition! Original Binding!
