Philadelphia: Printed for John Thompson & Abraham Small, [From the Hot-Press of John Thompson.] 1798, First Edition. No pagination; Old Testament: 10 F; Apocrypha: L 1; New Testament: 3 T. The text is printed in double columns, verse form with verse number. Re-backed spine with original leather boards & original title/volume labels. 16 x 10.5", folio. In fair condition. Original boards scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Scratching & soiling exhibited on leather covered boards from normal shelf-wear. Contemporary spine rubbed at head and tail, causing some dullness to gilt ruling. Original title label on Vol. 2 chipped around edges with some creasing. Water dampness stain exhibited on top corner of Vol. 1's text-block. Frontispiece has caused some off-setting on Vol. 1's title page. Toning throughout text-blocks, with instances of age-staining and some patches of foxing. Cording exposed at leaf 4 E in Vol. 1; binding remains intact. A few instances of some pencil marginalia. Re-backed bindings tight and intact. Quite an attractive set. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. In November, 1798, when first printed, this folio set was the largest Bible ever published in America & also the first every hot-pressed Bible. John Thompson owned the hot-press, & published with Abraham Small. The process of hot-pressing helped to sear the ink clearly on to the paper. The first ad for the bible was placed in the Gazette of the United States in April, 1796, reading, "Specimen of Elegant Printing. John Thompson & Abr. Small['s].Hot-Pressed Bible, which they believe to be the most beautiful production of its nature, hitherto seen." It was printed by subscription, where purchasers paid part of the price in advance, sometimes at a reduced price. In addition, subscribers' names would also be printed as a list of subscribers to the publication. Subscribers to this edition include Alexander Hamilton, John Jay (Governor of New York), Cornelius Roosevelt, Andrew Jackson, and Thomas Jefferson. RAREA1798PXYA 04/24 - HK1508.
