4to. Pp. vi, 141. Text in English and Chinese characters. Tiny hole in upper margin of first two leaves. Contemporary cloth backed boards, lightly rubbed, spine lettered, spine ends restored. First edition. The work was originally intended to be appended to the author's Chinese-English dictionary (Macao 1815-23) according to the preface. It is an important complement to the dictionary with information on history, geography, religion, festivals, etc, that is useful for people studying Chinese. The Reverend Robert Morrison, born in Scotland, was the first Protestant missionary in China. He arrived in Canton in 1807 and remained in China until his death in 1834. He became known for his linguistic abilities, serving as an interpreter on Lord Amherst's embassy to Peking in 1816, making the first Chinese version of the Bible, and compiling the first Chinese-English dictionary. octavo in size and in good condition, unless otherwise stated. Prices are
in Euro; packing, postage and insurance are extra. Payment is to be made
