Benito Cereno is COMPLETE in three parts: 353 - 367 pp, 459 - 473 pp, & 633 - 644 pp. It is considered by some to be Herman Melville's greatest literary achievement. It is a novella recounting a revolt on a Spanish slave ship captained by Don Benito Cereno. The work takes place in 1799. The captain of a sealing ship Bachelor's Delight, Captain Amasa Delano, spots another shift drifting listlessly towards the bay of Santa Maria. He learns the ship is called the San Dominick and meets its captain, Don Benito Cenero. Upon arrival, Delano is greeted by Spaniards and black men and women who beg him for water and supplies. Instead of a storm or epidemic, a bloody slave revolt under Babo's, a slave, command caused the mortalities among the crew. Melville's main source for the novella was the 1817 memoir of Captain Amasa Delano. Through this memoir, Delano recounts what happens after his vessel, the Perseverance, encounters the Spanish slave ship, the Tryal, on February 20, 1805. Because of the stories ambiguity, it has been read by some as racist and pro-slavery and by others as anti-racist and abolitionist. The work is alluded to in famous American author Ralph Ellison's 1952 novel Invisible Man. Gift quality! A very clean copy!
